If you’re seriously thinking about living in a tiny house, you’re probably bouncing between inspiration and information overload. Trust me, you’re not alone.
When I first started diving into the tiny world, I found myself asking things like:
“Can I actually live with less? Will I go nuts in a small space? What do I need to get right from the start?“
So I’ve pulled together the tiny home living tips I wish someone had handed me earlier — tips based on real conversations with Unplgd clients, lessons from the builds we’ve done, and a whole lot of hands-on experience with tiny living in Australia.
1. Start with your why
Before you pick paint colours or talk to builders, get clear on your reason for going tiny.
Do you want to:
- Escape the mortgage trap?
- Simplify your lifestyle and focus on what matters?
- Live off-grid and reduce your footprint?
- Set up flexible, affordable housing on rural land?
Whatever your motivation, it becomes the compass for every choice you’ll make — from your layout, to whether you go off-grid, to how much stuff you’ll bring with you.
2. Step inside a few real tiny homes
If you’re in research mode, visiting tiny homes in person is hands-down one of the best things you can do.
Online photos are great — but they can’t replace that real-life feeling of stepping into a space and sensing, “Yep, I could live here.”
Or even better: “Oof, I thought I’d love a loft, but I think single-level is more my thing.”
That’s why we love exhibiting at events like the Tiny Homes Expo. Come along and explore the designs, ask us questions, and find out what really works for you.

3. Don’t forget to budget for the lifestyle
Yes, tiny homes are affordable housing solutions, but there’s more to it than just the price of the home itself.
Depending on your setup, you’ll want to factor in:
- Parking or land costs (unless you’re staying on someone else’s property)
- Off-grid systems (solar power, water tanks, greywater, composting toilets)
- Any relevant council approvals, skids or footings, or transport needs
A lot of this depends on where in Australia you’re planning to live — and whether you’re using it full-time, part-time, or turning it into an Airbnb investment.
4. Think about size in terms of how you live
Not all tiny homes are tiny in the same way.
We build a range of custom tiny homes in Australia, and no two floorplans are quite alike.
Ask yourself:
- Am I working from home?
- Will I have pets, guests, or family joining me?
- Do I want a loft or do I prefer stairs or ground-floor everything?
- Do I need space to cook, create, stretch, or just be?
Your layout should reflect your daily routine — not what Instagram says you should love.
5. Try tiny before you commit
If you’ve never stayed in a tiny house before — go book a weekend away.
There are some amazing short stays across Australia, and a few of our Unplgd builds are now Airbnb rentals you can try. It’s a great way to test drive the lifestyle, see how it feels to live smaller, and get a sense of what works best for you.
Plus… it’s a fun excuse for a mini break!
